Chapter 8

Mika sat beside Lance on the flight, her hand in his, out of sight of the others. Being the only female on the team made her a target of scrutiny. Holding hands with a member of the team would be frowned upon. Usually, she’d avoid any public displays of affection. She’d fought hard to be considered worthy of her position in the Sayeret Matkal. Probably harder than most of the men on the team. Once they made it through the training, they were accepted.

Not Mika. She had to constantly prove herself, or they’d see her as weak. So, holding hands with a member of an attack team was a big deal. After what they’d been through that day, Mika didn’t care if someone caught her holding hands with the American. If anyone commented, she’d pound him into the ground to prove herself, yet again.

Light faded from the sky as they lifted off the tarmac of the military airfield and rose above the city of Jerusalem. Streetlights blinked on below, shining over the ancient structures and the modern buildings. This holy city had been her home for all her life. Even when she’d been stationed at other locations in the country, she knew she could always come home to her father’s house. She would always have a place here.

Until Khaled had her home destroyed. Now, as she stared down at the city, growing smaller by the minute, the realization that the house she’d grown up in was gone hit her hard. She had to remind herself that her losses could have been worse. Her father could have been in that house or his car when they exploded. Her father had dedicated his life to his country by joining the military. He’d continued his service as a private contractor, working with the government.

He deserved to retire and live the rest of his life in peace.

Mika thought of the vacation Lance had planned on the lake near Fort Hood. Her father liked fishing. He would enjoy sitting on a dock, in a boat or standing on the bank, dipping his hook in the water. When this mission was over, she’d take that vacation she’d planned. She would go to the U.S. and visit the hometown her mother had grown up in. Maybe she’d ask Lance about the cabin on the lake. She could stay in a place like that and throw a line in the water. Now that her father’s home had been destroyed, he might consider going with her.

Her service anniversary was coming up. That date gave her the opportunity to choose a different life. She’d never considered anything other than the Sayeret Matkal life. Having worked so hard to get into the elite, usually all-male special forces unit, she figured it was a career commitment she’d continue in throughout her military career.

Her father had been a military man and had raised his only daughter, with the help of nannies and other military families who’d stepped in when he’d deployed to other parts of the world.
